The three most popular ways to finish an internal door are painting, wax and lacquering.

• Painting an unfinished internal door: 

If you want a specific colour, painting your unfinished internal door may be the best choice. 

It’s always best to prime your door with a wood primer before painting it but can choose whatever colour you want for your final coat. 

Some people like to paint their doors a neutral colour that matches their skirting board and door frame, like an understated anthracite grey or white. Other people prefer bright colours, like a cheery yellow or bright red, to draw a unique contrast. 

• Waxing an unfinished internal door:

If you love the look of natural wood, waxing can help you enhance the natural beauty of the wood grain in an unfinished interior door without changing it. You can choose between clear wax and tinted wax. Wax absorbs into the wood so it doesn’t change the texture of the wood. 

• Lacquering an unfinished internal door:

Lacquer is a great opportunity if you want a more polished, traditional look. Lacquers come in a range of tints but it’s important to note you can’t use a lighter colour than the natural wood. Lacquers can be built up over multiple layers so you have a lot of control over the final shade.
